Rector's speeches at the inauguration of the academic year

Thousands of male and female students picked up their virtual student indexes and started their bachelor's, master's, postgraduate or doctoral studies at Kozminski University for the first time. During the ceremony inaugurating the new academic year, representatives of students and graduates assured new students that a great intellectual adventure awaits them at Kozminski, great opportunities to study around the world as part of academic exchange and a friendly environment where they are sure to find their soul mates.

Our university is highly successful internationally. As one of 120 universities in the world, it has triple international accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA) and ranks high in the Financial Times rankings, making it the best business university in Central and Eastern Europe. This success has been earned over the years by a group of outstanding professors and lecturers, including many practitioners from the business market, as well as by the students themselves, who take part in international competitions of knowledge and professional prowess in the areas of finance, law and management.

Kozminski University is future-oriented, as Professor Grzegorz Mazurek, Rector, said in his inaugural speech. - As a university, we have been able to take the right side in the dispute between the 'old world', which raises more and more doubts among the young generation, and the aspirations for change for the better in the area of economy and social life. The choice of a 'new world', in line with the wishes of the youngest generations, is evidenced not only by the slogan of our Academy - 'a new school for a new world', its strategy, its sustainable development goals, but above all by concrete actions concerning ethical leadership, ethics, equality, tolerance, inclusiveness or care for the environment," said the Rector.

Opening the new academic year 2021/2022, Rector Prof. Grzegorz Mazurek could not help but refer to the past months, including the difficult situation of the pandemic that the whole world has been facing for more than a year.

"From my perspective, it was a year not so much of digitisation or pandemics, but a year of key values in life - support, help, cooperation, trust, responsibility. It was a year of gaining trust in the university. We were together, despite pandemic isolation. Together in the sense of an environmental community. Digital technologies gave us oxygen so that there was something to breathe in the murky waters of the pandemic," - Prof Mazurek said.

Speaking about the university's mission and its commitment to the socio-economic environment, the Rector listed "three megatrends affecting contemporary education and science: the perspective of relations with the environment, the perspective of digital transformation and the perspective of inclusive, responsible, sustainable development".

"We must fight for universities and the academic world to be, as it has been for many years, a beacon and a foundation for social development. We sail with the slogan: A new school for a new world!" - said Prof. Grzegorz Mazurek, Rector of ALK, during the inauguration.

"For me - as Rector - this is a special ceremony for at least three reasons.  Firstly, because we are starting this academic year with a new Rector-Dean team. A team that will assist me in managing the university for the next four years. I am very much counting on you. Secondly, because there has been a generational change in our academy. The founding fathers of the school - Prof Andrzej Kozminski and Prof Witold Bielecki - have decided to hand over the helm of university management to new hands, which is an additional change for all of us. Happily, the Professors are sharing their experience and authority through their active participation on the university's Board of Trustees. Third and finally, the times are indeed unique and extremely challenging for all of us. It is quite a challenge to grasp the helm of this great ship when the waves are so high," said Prof. Grzegorz Mazurek at the beginning of his speech.
